Posted October 17, 2018 12:08PM ESTThis is a short book by Jodi Picoult, a veteran writer, that is filled with practical advice on writing better fiction.
“In the face of death, death is a moment to reflect, a moment for a pause, a pause for reflection.
I’m not interested in writing novels anymore, I’m interested in living, I want to be a better writer,” Picoult writes in the book.”
When I think about the past, when I think of writing a book, I imagine myself as a child, sitting on a sunny day on a beach with my family and a sea of colorful sea foam, and we sit there, listening to the ocean waves crash on the sand.
And I think that is what I would like to be doing now.
To sit in a quiet corner of my head, a quiet spot where I can sit and think, I would love to write better.
So I’ve been working on it.
And the more I write, the better it is.
I love to think of how to make it better, how to change it, how I could improve.”
This isn’t a book for everyone, however, Picoult has some tips that are especially important to those who are struggling to make a living writing fiction.
The first and most important advice she gives is to not write for the sake of making money, but to make money for yourself.
Picoult says:”You know what’s more rewarding than making money?
Making money for your life.
I believe in that, I believe that if you can do it for yourself, then you can have a life for yourself that’s better than the one you have now.
If you can’t make money, you’re not going to be happy in your life.”
