Davidson Education Software has just announced that it has taken down its website, which lists its products as “free”.
In the past, this would have been a major deal, but not any more.
In response to a survey of its customers, Davidson found that 75 per cent said that their software was not the best and that the software should be “better” or “better than free”.
It is not the only company in the education space to be making this kind of change.
Many software companies have made the same mistake.
In a recent survey of over 2,000 companies, 68 per cent of respondents said they had made the decision to stop using software that was free.
What is happening to schools?
It is understandable that a business with an estimated turnover of $100 billion is looking for ways to cut costs.
Schools have long been a target of the IT industry, and this is not a new problem.
But the IT-industry has grown so big that it now dominates the world of education, making up 30 per cent to 50 per cent.
There is a growing perception that schools are no longer learning, that they are becoming more like factories.
The UK’s Education Funding Agency recently warned that the IT sector is spending up to $30 billion a year to keep the public sector working, and there is no indication that this is changing.
Education is a major source of income for some companies.
As technology companies have increasingly integrated their education products, it is becoming increasingly difficult for schools to keep up with their IT needs.
It is important for schools, and businesses, to learn from this and learn from the mistakes of the past.
Schools can make changes.
They can offer a choice of free or paid software, they can offer more choice in their curriculum, they may even introduce paid options.
In many cases, the choice is obvious, and the only reason a school would want to stop paying for software is if it is not going to make money.
Schools also need to be able to manage their IT budgets effectively.
They need to know how to balance their budgets effectively, and it is the responsibility of IT providers to make sure they do not.
The biggest lesson to learn is that, as technology continues to spread, it will increasingly impact all aspects of the education system.
This will require an overhaul of education.
This is a problem that education software is not likely to solve.
It will take more than just a software overhaul to address the challenges faced by education companies, and a better understanding of the nature of IT will help make it happen.
